Use AI captions

Turn on live AI captions in a session without a captioner, change how they look, and pop them out into a floating window.

AI captions turn what people say in a session into text as they speak. They are generated automatically, so they can contain mistakes, and they do not replace an interpreter or a captioner. Sessions with a captioner do not offer them.

Turn AI captions on and off

  1. Select AI captions on the control bar. Captions appear at the bottom of your screen, with the name of each speaker before their words.
  2. To turn them off, select Stop AI captions.

Your choice changes only your own screen. When someone else in the session has AI captions on, a notice at the bottom of your screen tells you. Select AI captions to see them too, or close the notice.

To read something said earlier, scroll up in the captions. The view stays where you left it while new captions arrive. Select Latest to go back to the newest captions.

Change how AI captions look

  1. Select the gear icon at the top right of the captions, or select Settings, then Configure AI captions. The AI captions preferences open on the right side.
  2. Choose your settings:
    • Caption height sets how many lines show at once, from 3 to 8.
    • Position puts the captions at the Top or the Bottom of your screen.
    • Font family, Font weight, Font size, Font color, Background color, and Line spacing change the text.

A preview at the bottom shows how the captions will look. Your settings are saved for your next session. To go back to the defaults, select the reset link at the top of the panel.

These settings are separate from the settings for captions from a captioner.

Pop out AI captions

A floating window stays on top of your other apps, so you can read the captions while you work in another window.

  1. Select the arrows icon at the top right of the captions, next to the gear icon. The captions move into a floating window.
  2. To bring them back, select the arrows icon in the floating window, or close it.

If the arrows icon is not there, your browser cannot open a floating window. The captions stay in the session.
