Caption a session in Zoom
Join the Zoom meeting for a SignGlasses session, rename yourself, and open the Zoom captions window when the captions are needed in Zoom.
Some attendees ask for captions in Zoom instead of in SignGlasses. You still start from the session in SignGlasses.
Join the Zoom meeting
- Sign in to SignGlasses and open the session.
- Select Join on external platform, or select the link under External Platform on the session page.
When the audio comes through SignGlasses instead of Zoom, the page shows two buttons. Select both: Provide captions on external platform and Receive audio on SignGlasses.
If it is the day of the session and you see “The external platform link has not yet been provided”, text SignGlasses right away at (801) 477-7958.
Rename yourself in Zoom
Your name in Zoom must be your first name followed by “Writer”, for example “Jane - Writer”. Writer is another word for captioner. Change your name as soon as you join.
- Select More at the bottom right of the screen.
- Select Participants.
- Hover over your name in the list and select More.
- Select Rename and enter the new name.
- Select the blue Rename button.
You can also open the list with the Participants icon at the bottom of the screen.
Open the captions window
- Select More at the bottom right of the screen.
- Select Captions.
- Select Show Captions Window.
You can also select the CC icon at the bottom of the screen, then select Show Captions Window.
Begin captioning in the captions window.
If Show Captions Window is missing
The Zoom meeting host has not assigned you as the captioner. Do both of these right away:
- Text SignGlasses at (801) 477-7958, or email ops@signglasses.com.
- Send a private chat to the meeting host in Zoom, and ask them to assign you as the captioner.
SignGlasses tells you what to do next. For other ways to reach the team, see Contact support.
